Railway History ~ "Of Time And The Train"

December 18th, 2007 · No Comments

I ran across an interesting article published on May 31, 1987 by Virginia Van Der Veer Hamilton a writer for The New York Times. This article was written just over 20 years ago, but still has an air of freshness to it because not much has changed since it's initial publication. Here is a leading exceprt from the article:
''When does your flight leave?'' my young acquaintance inquired as our Philadelphia convention drew toward a close. For a split second I considered an evasive answer, then decided to brave it out: ''I rode the train.'' My friend's fleeting grimace probably mirrored her inner conclusion: any American in the 1980's who deliberately wastes 48 hours on a train trip to and from a professional meeting must ipso facto be phobic, indigent or verging on senility. Possibly all of the above."
